Today was a truly inspiring day at Natures Harvest, as we witnessed firsthand the incredible progress being made by our cocoa farmers in West Nile. Among the many stories of dedication and growth, one stood out as a shining example of what is possible when passion meets opportunity—Farmer Safi Kalfan, a farmer whose cocoa farm has become a model of excellence and a source of inspiration for the entire West Nile region.
Farmer Safi Kalfan: A Model of Excellence in Cocoa Farming
Our journey began with a visit to the remarkable farm of Farmer Safi Kalfan in Lodonga, Yumbe District. Accompanied by Ms. Sohee Om from South Korea, representing Canaan Global Leadership Center and Kijami Table, we were immediately struck by the beauty and meticulous care evident in every aspect of Farmer Safi’s farm. His plantation is a testament to smart farming practices, with carefully planned intercropping and a self-constructed shallow well that will ensure his cocoa plants receive the water they need, even during dry seasons.

What makes Farmer Safi’s story even more compelling is his commitment to applying the knowledge he gained from Natures Harvest’s training program initially at Nyambiri demonstration farm in Nyambiri, Kuluba Sub-county, Koboko District and thereafter followed by another training at Jabara Vocational and Agricultural Training Institute. From April 22nd to 24th, 2024, he participated in Natures Harvest’s sessions at Jabara, where he learned the latest techniques in sustainable cocoa management. These trainings were expertly conducted by a team from NaCCORI led by Dr. Job Chemutai, the Production Officer for Mayuge District – Mr. Emmanuel Kawuzi, Prof. Kim of Canaan Global Leadership Center and Mr. Alfred Ocen of Uganda Cooperative Alliance (UCA). They were a fabulous team of well-grounded and knowledgeable experts in their respective fields. Today, every lesson from that training has been reflected in the thriving state of his remarkable farm. His success is not just personal—it’s a beacon of hope for all cocoa farmers in West Nile, demonstrating the power of training and realizing the potential for cocoa farming to transform lives.
As we toured his farm, guided by Farmer Safi himself, along with his wife and daughter who are equally dedicated to this family endeavor, we couldn’t help but feel a deep sense of pride. This farm is more than just a business; it’s a living example of what can be achieved through hard work, knowledge, and a shared experience among fellow cocoa farmers.
The Cocoa Pioneers of Yumbe District
While Farmer Safi’s story is undoubtedly the highlight of our visit to Lodonga in Yumbe, our day continued with visits to two other iconic farmers in Yumbe District, whose contributions to the cocoa industry are equally very significant.
Farmer Ismail Azabu and His Passionate Spouse: Our very first visit, was to Farmer Azabu and his wife, a couple whose dedication to cocoa farming has inspired all potential cocoa farmers in the neighborhood. Together, they have championed the cause of cocoa growing, spreading the “cocoa gospel” across Yumbe District. Thanks to their tireless efforts, the district now boasts over 137 cocoa farmers, each cultivating healthy, flourishing cocoa fields. Their story is a powerful reminder of the ripple effect that one passionate individual—or in this case, a couple—can have impact on an entire community.

Farmer Zakaria Dudu’s Legacy of Utilizing Land for Cocoa Cultivation: Next, we visited the expansive farm of Farmer Dudu, a man who has devoted large acreage of his land to cocoa cultivation. His vision extends beyond his own lifetime; by giving each of his children an acre of land to plant cocoa, Farmer Dudu is ensuring that the benefits of cocoa farming will be enjoyed by the entire family and future generations. His story underscores the long-term impact of cocoa farming, by providing not only just for the present but laying a firm and secure foundation for the future prosperity of his family.
Consolidating Cocoa Farming in West Nile
These visits came on the heels of a successful meeting with the Koboko Cocoa Farmers Cooperative, Koboko District Farmers’ Association (KODFA), and Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA), where serious and detailed discussions were held on the future of cocoa farming in West Nile. Members of the Cooperative Association as well as KODFA members raised critical issues and concerns which were responded to by the KOICA team led by Mr. Minchul Shin (Thomas) – Assistant Manager in KOICA Seoul South Korea.
The KOICA team led by the Assistant Manager – Mr. Minchul Shin (Thomas) carefully noted down key points for KOICA’s consideration for support and future guidance.

At Natures Harvest, we are committed more than ever before to empowering farmers like Safi, Azabu, and Dudu, their roles as models to be multiplied throughout the West Nile region.
Through Natures Harvest training programs, we equip farmers with the knowledge and skills they need to succeed. But Natures Harvest mission doesn’t stop there. Natures Harvest is committed and dedicated to providing continuous support, in promoting sustainable farming practices to enhance household incomes and improve livelihoods.
Looking Ahead: A Future of Hope and Success for All
Today’s events reaffirm in our belief in the power of cocoa farming in change lives. The success stories of Farmers Safi, Azabu, and Dudu are not just individual triumphs—they are the building blocks of a brighter, more prosperous future for the entire West Nile region.
As we continue to work closely with our partners, particularly KOICA, we are hopeful and equally excited about the future of cocoa farming in the West Nile region. We remain committed to our mission: to empower farmers, promote sustainable practices, and ensure that the benefits of cocoa farming reach every corner of our households throughout the region.
